I just got back from my first Niteo tour and I can’t stop talking about it! You know how sometimes you go on vacation, and you see a lot of but it feels a bit distant, like you’re just looking at a postcard? On this tour I felt like I really got to experience the country.

Shining a Light on Authenticity

Even before going on the tour, I knew it wouldn’t be a typical trip. Niteo, which means “to shine,” is all about benefiting local Christian believers and ministries. And they truly shine a light on authentic experiences.

Some of opportunities included visits with multi-generational local beekeepers, award-winning olive oil producers, and master artisans/craftsmen creating unique products.

Beyond the Guidebook

I felt like I was introduced to the real culture, not just the glossy version you find in guidebooks. We met local people and visited places that I honestly would never have found on my own.

Our tour director, Andrej, shared stories and insights that flowed from his love of life and his lived experiences. It was like having a friend who lives there showing you around their favorite spots. Through him we saw and benefited from many local connections.

Hands-On, Hearts-Open

The hands-on experiences were top-notch. There’s a huge difference between walking around a market and experiencing it. I wasn’t just seeing the vibrant colors of fresh produce, I was smelling the spices, tasting the local delicacies, feeling the textures of handcrafted goods, and hearing the chatter of vendors.

Slovenia Beekeeping, first Niteo tour

One of us got suited up with the master beekeeper

One experience was a visit to a master beekeeper. There are more beekeepers per capita in Slovenia than any other country. As a beekeeping enthusiast, I wanted to learn more.

Something I found intriguing is the use of Slovenian AZ hives. These hives are designed for ease of use (requires less strength and mobility than traditional hives) and are also less stressful for the bees. Less stress = less disease and more consistent production year over year. Natural methods of beekeeping are good for people, and for the bees.

Seeing a master use this method for 700+ hives was an inspiration and a personal lesson worth taking home! We asked questions, sampled different types of honey, and also purchased some to take home.

This was just one opportunity to truly get a feel for the local way of life.

My Amazing Journey through Croatia!

My first Niteo tour took me on an unforgettable journey through Croatia and a small part of Slovenia! Here are some of the highlights:

  • Soca Valley, Slovenia: We explored the scenic Soca valley. Its vibrant blue river and green and gold surroundings in the autumn were magical. Many also took advantage of rafting in the river.

Some in our group bonded through rafting

  • Triglav National Park: I got to visit a local dairy cooperative and learn about the cheese making process. We also tasted the subtleties of Tolmin artisan cheese (along with homemade bread) and enjoyed incredible alpine views.

  • Kozjak Waterfalls: We witnessed a stunning mountain sunrise near World War I trenches and explored nearby Kozjak waterfalls.

  • Predjama Castle: Set into a 400-foot cliff, this seemingly impregnable castle built into a cave was absolutely fascinating. Such a unique piece of history. And we certainly got our steps and stairs on that day!

  • Istria’s Local Artisans: We wandered through the charming streets of Rovinj and took part in a Sunset boat cruise (some even took a dip in the Adriatic Sea), and met some incredible local artisans in Istria. Another highlight of the day was meeting an award-winning olive producer and enjoying an olive oil tasting.

  • Plitvice National Park: The lakes and waterfalls at Plitvice National Park were even more stunning in person than in pictures. There is no way to describe the sixteen lakes and countless waterfalls interlaced with wooden walkways. The colors were unbelievable!

Autumn Plitvice National Park

There’s no bad time to visit Plitvice, but timing it with the autumn peak was genius.

  • Pag Island – We traveled to Pag Island and most of us experienced our first Michelin Dinner. The four-hour dining experience was enhanced by the camaraderie of friends.

Recently I was talking with a friend about the difference between “knowing” somebody, and truly being known by them.” I felt like Niteo really gets me and how I like to travel. I’m already anticipating my next adventure!
