Every winter millions of monarch butterflies from North America travel 3,000 miles to migrate to a park preserve in the highlands of Mexico. Travel to this natural wonder at the perfect time—when the butterflies are active and stirring to make their long journey back.

10 DAY ITINERARY

 
 

Guanajuato, Days 1-3 

 

Day 1, Friday Feb 16 – Welcome to Mexico! You’ll be welcomed by your guide at Leon’s airport and enjoy private transportation to the brightly-colored Guanajuato. Check into your hotel before meeting new travel friends and enjoying a welcome dinner.
 

Day 2, Saturday Feb 17 – Honeybees & Heroes. This morning visit a beekeeping destination. Your host owns seventy-five beehives throughout the hills surrounding Guanajuato. If you like, slip into one of the bee suits. Later shop for products made from honey or the hive. After lunch enjoy free time to explore, shop, or visit the mummy museum (optional) before a late afternoon walking tour to learn about Mexico’s heroes of independence. Take in the view from El Pípila, then wrap up the night with the delightful troubadours.
 

Day 3, Sunday Feb 18 – Authentic Hacienda. After breakfast, you’re on your way to a beautiful historic hacienda for a leisurely day of horseback riding, a massage, and a time to relax. After a late lunch, arrive back in Guanajuato. The evening is yours to enjoy however you want.
 
 

Patzcuaro, Days 4-6

 

Day 4, Monday Feb 19 – Charming Patzcuaro. In the morning, leave for charming Patzcuaro and a tour of everything this quaint town has to offer. You’ll find small shops with local potters, textile weavers and other artisans.
 

Day 5, Tuesday Feb 20 – Copper Craftsmanship. In the morning enjoy time to explore the many shops, or take a boat ride to Janítzio Island. After lunch, you’ll leave for nearby Santa Clara to watch the complexities involved in fine copper craftsmanship.
 

Day 6, Wednesday Feb 21 – Avocado orchard. Learn about Mexico’s “green gold” at a family-owned avocado orchard. Taste fresh guacamole and meet the owner. You’ll have lunch at a restaurant destination filled with beautiful artwork. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy on your own.
 
 

Morelia, Days 7-10

 

Day 7, Thursday Feb 22 – A beautiful colonial city. Today it’s on to beautiful Morélia and a walking tour of some of the architecture and sites for which it’s famous, including the Baroque-style cathedral. Late afternoon, visit a vibrant nonprofit making a difference in the lives of local youth (optional). Wrap up the day with some amazing made-to-order quesadillas.
 

Day 8, Friday Feb 23 – Millions of butterflies. You’ll leave early morning for the three-hour drive to the butterfly biosphere. On arrival, hike or take a horseback ride up to the meadows. Then take your time to enjoy the fascinating butterflies. You’ll arrive home late afternoon.
 

Day 9, Saturday Feb 24 – Cooking class & classic cathedral. Enjoy a leisurely start to your day. Late morning, enjoy hands-on cooking with a talented local chef (optional).  Shop and explore more before a farewell dinner and the lighting of Morelia’s cathedral.
 

Day 10, Sunday Feb 25 – Back home! Say your final goodbyes after breakfast before down time before traveling home. We hope you come again.

FAQ

What airports do I fly in and out of?
You’ll fly into BJX, the Guanajuato International Airport, which is actually located near Leon. You’ll fly home from Morelia, MLM. Complimentary private transportation is provided from the airport to the hotel between 12-2 and 2-3:30 pm so keep that in mind when booking your flights.

 

When will I receive details on my trip?
You’ll receive all the good stuff in September! Everything you’ll need to get ready for an amazing time in colonial Mexico, including cultural tips and suggested packing list.
