Niteo’s Guatemala Guide

Byron Alvarez was born and raised in the most populous city in all of Central America – Guatemala City. It is obvious that he is really comfortable navigating a modern metropolis, with its fast pace, vibrant markets, and modern way of life. However, if you spend any time with Byron out of the city, it also becomes obvious that there are few places in Guatemala where he doesn’t feel at home. When he arrives on the other side of the country in a remote village without running water or electricity, he fits there too, and is welcomed as one of their own.

Byron is the son of a pastor. The church Bryon’s father founded (CCCG) was commissioned by God 33 years ago to reach out to the next generation of Guatemalans. The church members, including Byron, have also worked tirelessly to provide for the physical needs of the poor in their beloved nation through feeding programs, medical clinics, children’s camps, education, and clean water. CCCG currently reaches 1700 kids in 16 villages through these programs. But, Byron is careful to point out that humanitarian efforts aren’t the primary focus for their church. Their first calling is to provide the next generation with hope through the gospel message: “Helping to meet a physical need is just a starting place for us. Our greater purpose and passion is to spread the life-changing message of the gospel. I want to talk about who God is so that those we meet can know Him.”

Nine years ago Byron started working alongside his father as a guide to North American and European travelers. During those years of training as a guide, Byron learned a lot. He learned the English language. He learned how to serve and to skillfully relate to visitors from other countries. But perhaps most importantly, Bryon learned a lot about himself during this time of preparation. He came to understand that he really enjoyed traveling and guiding other people through new experiences. He also learned that while there are many beautiful places to visit, his heart is devoted to Guatemala, where he says the weather is perfect, the people are friendly, the culture is rich, and fresh fruit is everywhere!

Byron’s strength as a guide comes from his warm, fun-loving personality, his experience and knowledge of his homeland, and his heart for people. When you take a Niteo Tour you are providing a salary for Byron (and others like him) who are working to bring the good news of hope to the next generation.
