After the birth of our son, my husband promised to take me on a cruise. I’d spent eight months on bed rest, and he was nice enough to realize I needed a vacation.
Six months later on Thanksgiving weekend, we set sail on a Celebrity Cruise ship to explore the western Caribbean. I settled in to enjoy sun on my face, wind in my hair, and service at my fingertips.
The staff was attentive, friendly, and represented countries from around the world. Our dining room waiter was from Croatia. Sitting at a formal Thanksgiving dinner and feeling relaxed, satisfied and very festive, I turned to our Croatian waiter and asked, “So how do you celebrate Thanksgiving in Croatia?”
Somewhere between his flustered look and my husband’s headshake, I remembered that the pilgrims had landed at Plymouth Rock not Pula, Croatia.
Sometimes there’s just no way to recover.
Whether you’re in a country that celebrates Thanksgiving Day or not, we wish you a day filled with memories of the many things you have for which to be thankful.

Been there, done that. I wanted to be courteous while in France and knew a few phrases of hello and thanks but I had them backwards for two weeks. I wondered why everyone had a mystified look on their faces.
